The question is on the front. Turn the card over for our take, then keep reading for what a ministry can actually do with it.

Marriage ministry can become unintentionally problem-centered.

Resources are created for conflict. Referrals happen when a couple is struggling. Counseling becomes visible when something is wrong. Enrichment is sometimes promoted as a way to repair or prevent difficulty.

Those services matter, but they do not define the full purpose of marriage formation.

A couple can love each other deeply, communicate reasonably well, enjoy their marriage, and still have significant room for growth.

They can deepen prayer. Improve communication. Strengthen friendship. Learn more about Catholic marriage. Explore new seasons of intimacy. Support other couples. Navigate changing responsibilities. Continue growing in generosity, patience, forgiveness, and shared mission.

Strong marriages also contribute something to the wider Church.

They become witnesses. They can mentor. They can form friendships with younger couples. They can demonstrate that intentional investment in marriage is normal rather than a sign of trouble.

When a ministry has little to offer healthy couples, it can accidentally teach that marriage resources exist mainly for problems.

Ongoing formation offers another message: a good marriage is worth continuing to form precisely because it is good.

What a ministry can do with this

  • Review your current marriage offerings and identify how many assume a problem needs fixing.
  • Create an invitation explicitly written for couples who already feel good about their marriage.
  • Ask healthy couples what kind of growth they would find genuinely interesting.

Where we are now

What would we currently recommend to a couple who told us, “Our marriage is good, and we want to keep growing”?

Where we could go

How could we make continued formation attractive to couples before they perceive a need?
