The question is on the front. Turn the card over for our take, then keep reading for what a ministry can actually do with it.

Marriage preparation naturally has a finish line. There are sessions to complete, requirements to satisfy, paperwork to submit, and a wedding date toward which everyone is working. Marriage formation does not have the same finish line.

That creates an important ministry question. What does the couple understand happens next?

If the answer is simply, “Come back if you need us,” ongoing formation can easily become associated with problems, major life events, or crisis. The newly married couple may have completed a strong preparation experience and still leave without a clear picture of how their relationship with the Church continues as husband and wife.

A next step does not have to be another large program. It can be an invitation into a recurring rhythm of formation, connection with other couples, a follow-up conversation, a gathering, ongoing educational content, or another form of accompaniment.

The important thing is intentionality.

Marriage Every Day approaches the wedding as a transition point. Preparation matters deeply, but married life introduces questions, pressures, joys, responsibilities, and opportunities that cannot be fully experienced in advance.

A ministry that provides a visible next step communicates something important to the couple: your marriage remains worth forming after the wedding day.

What a ministry can do with this

  • Review what a couple receives at the end of marriage preparation. Make sure one clear post-wedding next step is included.
  • Add a specific invitation to ongoing marriage formation before the couple completes preparation.
  • Ask recent newlyweds whether they understood what, if anything, came next after their wedding.

Where we are now

If a couple finished marriage preparation with us this week, what would they believe their next marriage-related connection to our ministry should be?

Where we could go

What is one intentional next step we could make visible to every couple before their wedding?

Wondering how this connects to what you already do?

Marriage Every Day works alongside parishes and ministries rather than replacing what they have built. If the questions in this deck are the ones you keep running into, we would like to hear about your situation.
