A ministry can offer excellent programs and still leave couples socially isolated from one another.
That distinction matters.
Attendance creates proximity. Friendship requires repeated contact, conversation, familiarity, and enough shared life for people to move beyond polite introductions.
For married couples, those relationships can become an important part of Catholic life. Another couple may be the people they have dinner with, ask for advice, see at Mass, invite their children around, call during a difficult week, or simply enjoy being with without needing a formal ministry agenda.
The question is not whether every couple needs a parish-sponsored best friend. The question is whether ministry creates enough opportunity for authentic relationships to emerge.
This is one reason IRL (In Real Life) is part of the Marriage Formation Flywheel. Digital formation can make learning accessible, but physical presence allows friendships and belonging to develop in ways content alone cannot produce.
A healthy ministry environment gives couples reasons to encounter one another repeatedly and naturally. Those encounters may happen through gatherings, small groups, meals, service, informal meetups, or other shared experiences.
The goal is not another event. The goal is relationship.
What a ministry can do with this
- List the places where married couples currently encounter one another outside Mass or formal instruction.
- Add one gathering whose primary purpose is connection rather than delivering content.
- Ask couples where they have actually formed friendships with other Catholic married couples.
Take this to your team
Where we are now
Where are real friendships among the married couples we serve forming today?
Where we could go
What could we create or encourage that would make those friendships more likely?
