Many ministries become most visible to a couple when something is already wrong.

Pastoral care in difficult moments matters. Professional counseling and other specialized support may also be necessary in situations that require them. Peer relationships do not replace either one.

They serve a different purpose.

A married couple who already knows other faithful couples has a form of relational support that cannot be created instantly in a crisis. There may already be trust, shared history, mutual respect, and enough familiarity for an honest conversation to happen.

That is one reason community belongs within marriage formation rather than sitting beside it as an optional social activity.

Relationships can be built during ordinary seasons so they are available during difficult ones.

For some couples, the first call may be to a mentor couple. For others, it may be friends from the parish or another couple they met through a gathering. The specific structure matters less than whether meaningful relationships actually exist.

A ministry cannot manufacture friendship, but it can create the conditions in which couples are more likely to know and trust one another before they need help.

What a ministry can do with this

  • Ask couples to identify whether they know another married couple they would feel comfortable calling for support.
  • Strengthen opportunities for relationships between newer and more experienced couples.
  • Make clear where couples should turn when a situation requires pastoral or professional support beyond peer accompaniment.

If a couple we serve encountered a difficult month tomorrow, who besides ministry staff might they already know and trust?

Where we could go

How could we help supportive relationships exist before couples urgently need them?
