Marriage preparation usually has identifiable ownership because the process requires it.
Forms need to be completed. Meetings need to happen. Programs need to be scheduled. Couples need instructions. Someone knows what is supposed to happen next.
Ongoing marriage formation often has fewer operational requirements, which makes responsibility easier to diffuse.
The pastor cares. Staff care. Volunteers care. Mentor couples care. The diocese may offer resources. Everyone may agree that married couples matter.
Yet if nobody owns the question, “What happens next for our married couples?” activity can become occasional and dependent on whoever has extra capacity.
Ownership does not mean one person must personally run every event, teach every topic, manage every couple, or create a comprehensive ministry from scratch.
It means someone keeps the mission visible.
That person or team can coordinate existing resources, maintain invitations, connect couples with opportunities, recruit volunteers, notice gaps, and make sure marriage formation does not disappear behind more urgent responsibilities.
Clear ownership is especially important when ministry capacity is limited because it allows outside resources, parish volunteers, diocesan support, and platforms such as Marriage Every Day to complement local ministry rather than leaving each leader to build everything alone.
What a ministry can do with this
- Name the person or team currently accountable for what happens after marriage preparation.
- Clarify what that ownership includes and what it does not include.
- Identify resources that can reduce the amount of formation content the local team has to create itself.

Where we are now
If someone asked today who owns ongoing marriage formation here, would everyone give the same answer?
Where we could go
