Urgent work has an advantage over important work.

Marriage preparation comes with wedding dates, requirements, appointments, deadlines, and couples waiting for answers. Those needs deserve attention.

Ongoing formation usually does not announce itself with the same urgency.

A gathering can be postponed. A newlywed follow-up can wait. A marriage enrichment idea can move to next quarter. Contact with married couples can become something the team intends to improve when things calm down.

Things may never fully calm down.

This is not a criticism of ministry leaders. It is a capacity reality.

The strategic response is not to tell an already stretched team to work harder. It is to examine which parts of ongoing formation actually require local staff attention and which can be supported through shared resources, volunteers, outside content, technology, mentor couples, diocesan collaboration, or platforms built for ongoing marriage formation.

Local ministry is especially valuable where relationship and pastoral presence matter most.

A sustainable approach lets leaders preserve that relational role without requiring them to become full-time content creators and event producers.

What a ministry can do with this

  • Name the marriage-related work that repeatedly slips when preparation volume increases.
  • Separate tasks that require local pastoral involvement from tasks that could be supported externally.
  • Protect one small recurring post-wedding activity rather than waiting to launch a comprehensive program.

Where we are now

What good marriage ministry idea have we postponed more than once because something more urgent took priority?

Where we could go

What could we stop building from scratch so our limited capacity can be used where local relationship matters most?
